Specialist dyslexia training for teachers
The Government is funding training for up to 4,000 serving teachers to take specialist courses in dyslexia. The TDA will support courses starting between September 2010 and February 2011.

The School Improvement Support Service is a new offering from Teachers TV that provides specific video recommendations to support the key priorities of your School Improvement Plan. There are only 100 places left for this service and Teachers TV is accepting schools on a first come, first served basis.

Reducing in-school variation
In partnership with the National College, the Agency has developed a practical guide on in-school variation (ISV). By learning about and reducing ISV, middle-to-senior school leaders at secondary schools can raise the level of attainment within their school.

Into Teaching: promoting access for disabled people
Into Teaching is a new project run by Skill: National Bureau for Students with Disabilities that is funded by the TDA. The project is designed to encourage and support more disabled people to become teachers.

Training, teaching, leadership schools: new designation
A fresh phase of consultation on the role of training and teaching schools in providing quality-assured, cluster-based professional development will shortly be launched by the TDA in partnership with the National College and Children’s Services. The feedback will help create a new designation and realise the vision of a sustainable network of professional development clusters.

Schools invited to join extended services ‘mashup’
A Google-map ‘mashup’ has launched to help schools and clusters of schools promote details of their extended services. Both school staff and local parents now understand what’s on offer and why, by accessing the map-based listing, or mashup, of available activities and services.

Children’s e-safety a priority
At the TDA, we take children’s online security very seriously. We participated in formulating the internet safety strategy, launched by Gordon Brown last December, and this month we’re supporting the award-winning resource, Know-IT-All.

Toolkit keeps students safe online
The award-winning Know IT All (KIA) suite of resources has been further developed with a toolkit for secondary school teachers. It contains guidelines and practical resources for developing young people’s ability to keep safe online and to deal with risks.

Have your say on the Common Core
In last month’s tdaNews, we reported on how we are working with partners in the Children’s Workforce Network to consult on, and refresh, the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge for the Children’s Workforce (the ‘Common Core’).

Extended schools: conference report
More than 900 delegates attended the TDA and DCSF’s extended schools conference on 9 February 2010. The event was hosted by radio presenter Jenni Murray with a keynote speech from the Minister of State for Children, Young People and Families, Dawn Primarolo MP.

Enrolment on the new Masters in Teaching in Learning (MTL) is now open across the country.

Tackling misbehaviour in schools
The Department for Children Schools and Families has produced an eight-page booklet on addressing misbehaviour in schools for use by parents, carers and school staff. It details schools’ powers and parents’ responsibilities.

ITT professional resource networks: evaluation published
The University of Leeds’ evaluation of the teacher training resource bank (TTRB), Multiverse and Behaviour4Learning websites, commissioned by the TDA, is now online. The evaluation assessed the benefits of the service to users
– notably initial teacher training (ITT) providers and trainees – and identified any lessons to be learned in relation to web-based projects.

School networks for parents begins pilot promotion
Community networks for parents have been set up on the Netmums website for every secondary school in the country. Now, Netmums, along with DadTalk, are working to promote the networks to parents in three pilot areas.

Teachers’ TV gets personal with online assistance
With over 3,500 videos available on Teachers’ TV, the viewer might occasionally need a little extra help finding exactly what they want. The new
video request service takes the slog out of the search, matching relevant videos to individual requests for help.

Refugees into Teaching needs mentors and placements
Refugees into Teaching (RiT) is looking for schools that can offer short-term, voluntary placements and mentors for displaced teachers across the country.

New Primary Curriculum goes live
The new Primary Curriculum went live on the QCDA website on 31 January 2010. The resources on the site include the statutory aims of the Primary Curriculum, the essentials for learning and life, and the six areas of learning plus religious education. It also offers a design tool to help schools plan a bespoke curriculum that is tailored to the needs of their learners.

Working with parents
Last month’s issue touched on the continuing and fundamental role of extended services in the work that we do. This month I’d like to reiterate the centrality of working with parents to that piece of work. Getting parents and carers engaged with their child’s learning and with the school where that happens is a sure way of delivering better outcomes.
